Large wood, once referred to in many fields as "large woody debris", provides many ecosystem functions in river corridors. This cartoon demonstrates just a few of them. Wood has historically been removed from rivers around the globe, and with the loss of wood, we also lose the associated functions of wood. Not to fear, however, as river scientists and restoration practitioners are hard at work coming up with creative ways to reintroduce wood to rivers. Large wood is definitely NOT debris! Created in Adobe Fresco and Illustrator.
